In 1892, Ike Busch opened a small shop in the Chinatown neighborhood of Manhattan where he sold clothing and fabrics that came off the merchant boats in New York Harbor.By the turn of the 20th century, I. Buss, as the shop became known, soon transitioned into uniforms. Ike and his three sons— Joe, Harold, and Phil—grew the family business, manufacturing made-to-order uniforms for military servicemen, policemen, postal workers, and railway workers. In the 1950s, Ike’s grandchildren, Stuart and Seralie Busch, took over the family business and expanded the company, adding ready-to-wear elements in addition to custom-designed uniforms. The two also founded Allan Uniform Rental, a complementary full-service rental business, and opened a retail location in downtown Manhattan selling military surplus and vintage clothing. Though the retail store closed in 1986, the rental business continued to grow, and the Busch family eventually merged the two companies into I. Buss & Allan Uniform Company®. Now into its fourth generation, Stuart’s daughter Jennifer Busch leads the company, which she has developed into a design firm in addition to being uniform manufacturers. Her focus has been to develop distinct “looks” for her clients so that uniforms are not simply supplied, but rather designed as an extension of her clients’ brand.
